10 Tips To Living A Longer And Healthier Life

There are a number of things you’re already doing to extend the longevity of your life and you probably never stopped to think twice about it. From walking to drinking water, there are simple things you can do to help improve your health.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

Eating right is something a lot of people struggle with. It’s hard to resist that burger and fries when they taste so good. But did you know that eating broccoli, turmeric, hibiscus tea, and strawberries can help add years to your life? And it’s no surprise that studies have shown that plant-based diets can both lower your cholesterol and your risk for obesity, which increases your chances of living a longer and healthier life.

PORTION CONTROL

It’s not just about what you eat, but how much. It’s important to learn how to moderate your portion sizes. Portion control can have other positive effects on your life, including feeling less sluggish and more productive.

NO SMOKING

To state the obvious, smoking is bad for your health. When you smoke, you’re intentionally taking years off your life (and possibly those around you thanks to secondhand smoke). Make the effort to quit while you’re ahead if you want to live longer.

AVOID EXCESSIVE DRINKING

It’s okay to drink, just do it in moderation. Consuming large amounts of alcohol on a daily basis can have negative effects on your health, including excessive weight gain. Everything is good in moderation. Studies have shown that having one glass of wine a day can lower your cholesterol and lower your chances of having a stroke.

TAKE THE STAIRS

Did you know that sitting can be as lethal as smoking? It’s important to add steps to your day and get yourself moving, especially if you have a desk job or tend to sit a lot. You can even get a fitness tracker to remind you. Take the stairs, go for a walk after dinner. Implementing this simple change can make a huge difference in the long run.

DON'T BE A HERMIT

According to Harvard, studies have shown that the secret to a longer and happier life is to have deep and meaningful relationships. Put yourself out there. Call up an old friend you haven’t seen in a while and make plans. Socialize. It’s important to nurture the relationships you have.

STAY HYDRATED

You probably drink water on a daily basis, but are you drinking enough? The effects of dehydration can have a long-term effect on your health, including seizures, brain swelling, and kidney failure. It’s important to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water to avoid these scary effects.

EXERCISE

Studies have shown that exercising at least 20 minutes a day can help improve the overall quality of your life, from regulating your sleep cycle to strengthening your cardiovascular health. When you put that into perspective, 20 minutes a day seems like nothing. Studies have also shown that runners live longer, for obvious reasons. It’s important to stay active and find ways to sneak in a small workout in your day for a longer, more well-balanced life.

NO ALL-NIGHTERS

A lack of sleep not only shortens your life and increases your risk of death, it also affects your productivity and overall mood. It’s important to keep a regulated sleep cycle to give you the energy you need to power through your week.

SKIP THE SODA

Research shows that drinking one or more regular or diet colas every day doubles your risk of metabolic syndrome. Other conditions include high blood pressure, elevated insulin levels, weight gain, and increase your chances of developing heart disease and diabetes. Like everything else in life, soda is good in moderation.
