The Difference Between Self-Care and Self-Indulgence
Posted on September 12 2018
In today's day and age, many of us are constantly on-the-go and it's easy to forget to take some time for ourselves. Self-care is crucial in maintaining a balanced lifestyle. But when does self-care become self-indulgence?
Let's talk about self-care first. Self-care is thinking about your long-term happiness and well-being. It's about focusing on your physical, mental, and emotional health. It's important to maintain a healthy balance.
Everyone's self-care is different. Maybe you find relaxation in a hot bubble bath and reading your favorite book. Or maybe you prefer grabbing a drink with friends or going to the salon and getting your nails done. It's okay to "treat yourself" every once in a while, but without moderation, self-care can quickly turn into self-indulgence.
Self-indulgence is "self-care" without moderation. It's important to set boundaries for yourself. It's okay to go out with your friends on a Friday night instead of hitting the gym. It's okay to order takeout instead of cooking your meal. It's good to "treat yourself" every once in a while as long as it doesn't become frequent.
Self-care is not a "one-size-fits-all" type of remedy. Everyone has different ways of relaxing. Do what you enjoy and find what works best for you.
Here are some suggestions:
1. Go for a walk.
2. Watch an episode of your favorite show.
3. Call up an old friend you haven't talked to in a while.
4. Put on a face mask.
5. Enjoy a bubble bath.
6. Give yourself a manicure or pedicure.
Also, put down your phone and unplug for at least an hour. This is a simple change that could make a huge difference.
The next time you're starting to feel the stress, remember to pause and dedicate some time for yourself. Remember that finding balance is crucial for long-term happiness and well-being.
