I'm not one to splurge on lip liners, so I went for Purple Rain because based on swatches I've seen it's very close to MAC's Magenta. I'm sad to say I'm really disappointed in the quality. I have several other NYX lip liners, all of which I love, but I think I either got a dud with Purple Rain or NYX can't keep up their consistency in pigmentation. It's kind of patchy and takes quite a few swipes to get decent opacity. I do plan on picking up another one (and update this review when I do) just incase I did happen to get a bad batch, because even having two of them is still less than half the price of one MAC Magenta.EDIT: I finally got around to purchasing another one and it is indeed better than the first. I purchased it online so that I would get a fresh batch, rather than the first one which I bought in store. It glides on more smoothly and has better pigmentation. However, it's still slightly less opaque than my other NYX pencil lip liners. I'm assuming that considering I have two of them now, it's just the nature of this particular color.
I struggle with fuchsia and purple shades.
I struggle with fuchsia and purple shades. With my complexion they're hard to pull off. However, I love this lip pencil. It's a shimmery purple with dusky rose undertones, and works well with MAC Violetta. I've also used it under brighter pink lipsticks, like MAC Candy Yum-Yum, to give my lips a fuller appearance. The shimmery lip pencils like Purple Rain don't last as long as the matte ones, but this is to be expected.Overall I have been very impressed with NYX lip pencils. I picked up 12 of them and every one has been creamy, applied smoothly, and lasted a long time. This particular color is not one I use very often, and also does not last as long as a matte shade, which is why I deducted one lipstick.
I'd been looking for this color of lip liner for a pathetically long time.
I'd been looking for this color of lip liner for a pathetically long time. I'd noticed Purple Rain online, but had heard that it's virtually identical to the MAC lip pencil in Magenta, which I already own, so I passed. However, I recently took a chance on Purple Rain, and I'm pleased to say that it's considerably more purple than MAC Magenta, which to me is more of a fuchsia. Purple Rain is very close to the same color as MAC Violetta lipstick, which is one of my favorites. Purple Rain is one of those wonderfully wearable purple lip products that won't make you look oxygen-deprived. Purple Rain may not be quite as creamy as the typical MAC pencil, and it's shorter, but it performs well, and for the very small price, Purple Rain is a great buy. When I use up this one, I'll hasten to buy another Purple Rain.
I have been eyeing Purple Rain for a few months.
I have been eyeing Purple Rain for a few months. I've been wanting to get it, but couldn't justify buying a lip pencil that I thought I would not use a lot. Well, lately I have been on a pink and purple lippy fix. There is currently a sale going on with NYX cosmetics at Pharma Plus, and I decided to buy this for $3.74cdn. I am so glad I got this. This shade is nearly identical to MAC's Style Curve lipstick (of which I have two). And, it goes beautifully with every blue-based pink lipstick and gloss I own. I will definitely get another lip pencil in this shade while it is still on sale.
