If you’ve ever painted your nails and wondered, “Am I doing this right?” — you’re not alone.  Applying nail polish seems simple, but the number of coats can make all the difference. So, how many coats of nail polish should you apply?

The Base Coat: Your Foundation

Before anything else, start with a base coat. It’s the unsung hero of any manicure. A base coat protects your natural nails from staining, creates a smooth surface for polish, and helps your color adhere better.  Whether it is gel polish or regular nail polish/lacquer, think of it as your foundation layer — thin and even is the way to go. The Color Coats

Most polishes look best with two thin coats of color. This ensures even coverage, true-to-bottle color, and longer wear. Let each coat dry completely before adding the next to avoid smudges or dents.  For gel polish, make sure to fully cure each layer with a UV/LED lamp.

Special Situations

While the “one base, two color, one top” rule works for most, there are a few exceptions:
