DND gel polish is one of the easiest professional gel systems to learn — but if you're new to it, knowing exactly what to buy first can feel confusing. There are three lines, dozens of starter sets, separate base and top coats, combo sets, and a lot of shade numbers to sort through.
This guide cuts straight to it: what comes in a DND gel starter kit, what's not included that you'll still need, and which kit makes the most sense for your situation. You can also visit the DND brand hub for a full overview of the line, or browse all DND gel polish to explore individual shades.
A DND gel starter kit gives you everything you need for the color itself — base coat, top coat, and five matched gel and lacquer shades. The one thing it doesn't include is a lamp.
DND starter kits at Beyond Polish are curated bundles — not random assortments. Each kit is built around a specific color story (nudes, brights, fall tones, etc.) and includes a complete system for using those colors properly from day one.
A standard DND Duo Starter Set includes:
DC Starter Sets follow the same format — five gel and lacquer duo sets plus the DC-line base (#800) and top coat (#900). The DC system uses gold-capped gel bottles and is interchangeable with DND base and top coats.

DND gel polish kits include everything product-related for the application. What they don't include are the tools and equipment needed to actually do the manicure. If you're starting from zero, make sure you have the following before your kit arrives.
If you already have a lamp and basic nail tools, a DND starter kit is genuinely all you need to get going. The kit gives you the complete color system — you supply the equipment.
Both the DND Duo and DND DC starter kits use the same three-step application system and are equally beginner-friendly. The decision comes down to which color palette catches your eye and whether you want the DC line's higher pigmentation. Here's a practical way to decide:
Choose a DND Duo Starter Kit if you want the broadest color range to choose from, prefer softer nudes and pinks, or are starting fresh and want to learn the system with the classic DND line. The Duo line has the largest catalog, which makes expanding your collection easy down the road.
Choose a DND DC Starter Kit if you want bolder, more saturated coverage from the start, prefer the DC line's color palette, or have already been using DC in a salon setting and want to start your home kit with the same system.
Both formats are available at Beyond Polish in multiple colorways. The starter kits page is organized so you can see exactly which shades are in each set before you buy. Browse all options at the DND gel starter kits collection.

DND uses a three-step gel system. The process is the same whether you're using the Duo or DC line — base coat, color coats, top coat, all cured under an LED lamp between steps. The key to long wear is in the prep and in capping the free edge with each coat.
- Prep your nails. Remove any existing polish, push back cuticles, lightly buff the nail surface, and wipe each nail with a lint-free pad soaked in alcohol or nail cleanse to remove dust and oil. Don't skip this — adhesion depends on it.
- Apply base coat and cure. Brush a thin layer of DND Base Gel (#400) onto each nail, making sure to cap the free edge. Cure for 30 seconds under an LED lamp.
- Apply first color coat and cure. Apply a thin, even layer of your chosen gel color, capping the free edge. Cure for 45 seconds under LED.
- Apply second color coat and cure. Repeat with a second thin layer. Avoid applying thick coats — thin layers cure more evenly and last longer. Cure 45 seconds.
- Apply top coat and cure. Brush DND No-Cleanse Top Gel (#500) over each nail, capping the free edge. Cure 45 seconds. No wipe needed — it cures to a clean, glossy finish.
- Hydrate. Apply cuticle oil around each nail. Repeat daily throughout the wear cycle to maintain flexibility and prevent early lifting.
When you're ready to remove: soak a cotton pad in acetone, place over each nail, wrap in foil, and leave for 10–15 minutes. The gel will loosen and slide off with gentle pressure from a cuticle stick. Never forcibly peel gel — it damages the natural nail plate.
Once you've used your starter kit a few times and are comfortable with the application, expanding your color range is straightforward. You don't need to buy more kits — individual DND duo sets are available separately, and your starter kit's base and top coat will work with any DND color you add.
Individual shades from the DND Duo collection and the DND DC collection start at $5.99 per set. Because DND base and top coats are interchangeable across lines, you can mix Duo and DC colors with the same base and top from your starter kit. If you want the same convenience of a pre-bundled set but with a single color plus base and top, individual DND combo sets are available for each shade.

What comes in a DND gel polish starter kit?
A standard DND gel starter kit includes five gel and lacquer duo sets (one gel polish + one matching lacquer per shade), a DND base gel, and a DND no-cleanse top coat. DC starter kits follow the same format using the DC-line base (#800) and top (#900). What's not included is an LED or UV lamp, which you'll need separately to cure the gel.
Do I need a special lamp for DND gel polish?
No — any professional LED or UV nail lamp will work with DND gel polish. You don't need a DND-branded lamp. LED lamps cure DND gel in 30–45 seconds per coat. UV lamps take longer, typically up to 2 minutes per coat. Make sure your lamp produces enough wattage for gel curing — undercured gel is the most common reason for premature chipping and lifting.
What is the difference between a DND Duo starter kit and a DND DC starter kit?
The format is identical — five shades plus base and top coat. The difference is the line: DND Duo uses white-capped bottles and the standard DND formula. DND DC uses gold-capped bottles with a slightly larger volume (0.6 fl oz vs 0.5 fl oz) and is known for higher pigmentation. The two systems are compatible — base and top coats are interchangeable across both lines. Read our full DND vs DND DC guide for more detail.
Can I use DND gel polish at home as a beginner?
Yes — DND is beginner-friendly as long as you have an LED or UV lamp for curing. The formula is consistent and forgiving, the three-step system is straightforward, and the starter kits are specifically designed for people who are new to the system. The most important beginner tip: keep your color coats thin and always cap the free edge. Thick coats are the most common beginner mistake and the leading cause of early chipping.
How long does DND gel polish last from a starter kit?
With proper prep and application, DND gel polish lasts two to three weeks without chipping or significant wear. Longevity depends most on nail prep (clean, dehydrated, lightly buffed nails), thin application, capping the free edge on every coat, and full curing under the lamp. Apply cuticle oil daily to help maintain wear at the edges.
