Jelly Nails Are Everywhere Right Now — Here's How to Get the Look

Sheer, glossy, and lit-from-within — the squishy-looking manicure taking over every feed is easier to pull off than it looks.

By the Beyond Polish Team 6 min read Trend Guide

Jelly nails are officially the manicure of the moment — and honestly, the name tells you everything. Think of the translucent, candy-colored gloss of a fruit gummy: color you can see into, not just look at. Where a classic creme polish is opaque and solid, jelly nails let light pass through the color for a juicy, glassy, lit-from-within finish that looks incredible in photos and even better in person.

Here's everything you need to know about the jelly nail trend — what it is, why it's blowing up again, how to do jelly nails at home, and the exact jelly nail polish shades to shop for every version of the look.

01
The basics
What Are Jelly Nails, Exactly?
Sheer + glossy + buildable = jelly.

Jelly nails are any manicure done with a sheer, translucent color — usually a jelly-finish polish or gel — sealed under a high-gloss top coat. The defining feature is transparency: you can faintly see the nail (or the layers beneath) through the color, which gives that squishy, gummy-candy depth a creme polish can't replicate. One coat reads as a barely-there tint; two or three coats build a richer, stained-glass vibe while staying translucent.

"Jelly polish is buildable by design — one coat is a whisper of color, three coats is a whole mood."

The sheerness isn't a flaw. It's the entire point.

The look first exploded in the '90s (hello, jelly sandals era), but the current wave is driven by the Korean jelly nails aesthetic — ultra-glassy, syrup-sheer manicures layered over short, natural nails. It's the nail version of glass skin: clean, dewy, and effortless-looking.

The Jelly Nail Colors to Try First
From barely-there blush to vampy berry.

Pink jelly nails are the gateway shade — a rosy, watercolor flush that flatters every skin tone and works from the office to a night out. Red jelly nails are the bolder classic: think cherry cola gloss with real depth. And if you want something quieter, nude jelly nails give you that "my nails but juicier" finish that pairs with everything. Feeling bolder? Sheer blue jellies and juicy orange jellies are having their own moment this summer.

Jelly, But Make It Extra
Cat eye, chrome, and aura variations.

Once you've mastered the classic look, the fun starts. Jelly cat eye nails layer a magnetic polish or gel over a sheer base so a ribbon of light appears to float inside the color — dimensional and hypnotic (KBShimmer's magnetic multichromes do this beautifully, no lamp required). Jelly chrome nails add a whisper of chrome powder over the tint for a liquid-metal glow that stays translucent. And jelly aura nails blur a soft halo of pigment into the center of a sheer base for that dreamy, airbrushed gradient.

For the glassiest possible finish — what some call jelly glass nails — keep every layer thin, cap the free edge, and finish with a high-shine no-wipe top coat. Gel formulas make this easiest, since each layer cures crystal-clear. And if you're still deciding on a direction, our roundup of jelly nail ideas has even more ways to wear the trend.

The tutorial
How to Do Jelly Nails at Home
Five steps to the juiciest mani of your life.
  1. Prep like it matters — because with sheer color, it does. Push back cuticles, lightly buff, and cleanse. Any ridge or rough spot will show through a translucent finish.
  2. Start with a base coat to protect the nail and prevent staining — deeper jellies especially can tint bare nails.
  3. Build the color in thin coats. One coat for a sheer wash, two to three for depth. Let each coat dry (or cure) fully — thick coats are the enemy of the glassy jelly finish.
  4. Cap the free edge with each color coat to keep the tips from wearing through and to preserve that clean, glossy line.
  5. Seal with a high-gloss top coat. This is what takes the look from "sheer polish" to full jelly-glass shine. Reapply every few days to keep the gloss fresh.

Want the jelly look with more strength and structure — especially on longer nails? Do the same layering technique with a sheer builder gel base. Our Ultimate Guide to Builder Gel covers the full application process.
