For those who may be unfamiliar, People Of Color is an small indie nail brand founded by Jacqueline Carrington. Growing up, she never saw images of nail polishes that reflected on brown and darker skin tones. The POC mission is to celebrate and represent people of color through their nail polish collections and the stories that they tell. What makes this brand unique is that there is a story to tell behind every color and collection they release. So not only are you getting a trendy nail color, you're also getting a mini history lesson at the same time!
Now, let's take a closer look at the collection!
People Of Color: You're A Gem
Garnet
This color can be described as a deep burgundy creme. People Of Color says the birthstone of January comes from the Latin word "Garanatus," meaning "seedlike", in reference to a pomegranate. It's seen as a symbol of trust, friendship and love.
Amethyst
This color can be described as a light lilac purple creme. People Of Color says the birthstone of February derives from the ancient Greek word "amethustos", meaning sober. It's the purple variety of the mineral Quartz, and it's the most valuable and prized variety.
Aquamarine
This color can be described as a bright aqua blue shimmer. People Of Color says the birthstone of March; the seawater color has given this gemstone its name as the name "aquamarine" is derived from the Latin word for seawater. The most valued aquamarine stones are a rich, sky blue, but even the blue stones have a green or blueish green tint.
Diamond
This color can be described as a clear base with flecks of shiny iridescent glitter. People Of Color says that the birthstone of April is a mineral composed of pure carbon, and renowned for being the hardest substance on Earth.
Emerald
This color can be described as a jewel-toned green creme. People Of Color says that the birthstone of May; the word "smaragdos", which means green stone. It was known that emerald was a favorite gem of Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt, rediscovered a hundred years ago near the Red Sea, was one of the earliest emerald occurrences in human history.
Pearl
This color can be described as a milky white creme. People Of Color says the birthstone of June; unlike most other gemstones, which are minerals pearls are oragnic and formed by living organisms. In ancient stories, pearls are associated in faithfulness, friends, loyalty, modesty, and purity.
Ruby
This color can be described as a dark red creme. People Of Color says the birthstone of July; Ruby is derived from the Latin word "ruber", meaning red -- the color of passion. One of the surprising facts about rubies is that their hardness comes in second place to diamonds (as with sapphires, which come from the same mineral called corundum). The diamond is the only natural gemstone harder than a ruby.
Peridot
This color can be described as a sour apple green creme. People Of Color says the birthstone of August is a rare-gem-quality variety of the common mineral olivine, which forms deep inside the Earth's mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanoes.
Sapphire
This color can be described as a cobalt blue shimmer. People Of Color says that the birthstone of September is colored by the presence of titanium and iron. It's the balance of these impurities within the stone that causes such a wide range of blue tones, from bright, clean cornflower blues to deep dark midnight blues.
Opal
This color can be described as a pearlescent baby pink shimmer. People Of Color says that the play of color you see in opal crystals is due to millions of tiny silica spheres of different sizes in their internal structure. These tiny spheres refract light and create beautiful spectral colors.
Topaz
This color can be described as a tangerine orange shimmer with yellow undertones. People Of Color says that this birthstone is known for being a symbol of friendship, and it also happens to be the state gemstone for the state of Utah.
Turquoise
This color can be described as a shimmery blue.
Fun fact! The three glitter shades are sustainable and made from cellulose from sustainably farmed eucalyptus trees.
