The safe way to remove Gel-X extensions at home — no prying, no damage, no drama. Just the right tools and 20 minutes.

The most important thing to know before you start: Gel-X tips are designed to soak off. You don't need to force them, pry them, or file aggressively into your natural nail. Doing any of those things is where damage happens — not from the product itself. Follow this process and your natural nails will come out completely intact.

If you're also thinking about your next set, our Gel-X application guide walks through the full process from prep to finished set.

What you'll need

Removal kit
100% pure acetone
Foil remover wraps or silicone clips
Cotton pads or lint-free wipes
180-grit nail file
Cuticle pusher or orangewood stick
Nail clippers (optional — for trimming length first)
Cuticle oil
Before you start

Use 100% pure acetone — not regular nail polish remover. Standard removers don't have the strength to break down the gel bond cleanly and you'll end up soaking much longer, which is harsher on the surrounding skin. Pure acetone is the right tool for this job.

The removal — step by step

1

Clip down the length (if needed)

If your tips are long, use nail clippers to cut them down as short as possible before soaking. Less mass means the acetone reaches the gel bond faster — shorter soak time, less skin exposure to acetone. File any sharp cut edges smooth before moving on.

2

Buff the top coat to break the seal

Lightly file the surface of each nail with a 180-grit file — just enough to take the shine off and break through the top coat. You're not trying to file through the tip, just removing the sealed top layer so the acetone can penetrate. This step cuts your soak time significantly.

Important Go lightly. The goal is to dull the surface, not file into the tip. One or two passes with the file is usually all it takes.
3

Soak with acetone and wrap

Soak a cotton pad in pure acetone and place it directly on the nail, covering the entire surface. Wrap each finger tightly in foil to hold the cotton in place — or use silicone remover clips, which are reusable and much easier to manage on your own. Repeat for all ten nails.

Wait 15 to 20 minutes. Don't peek early — let the acetone do the work fully before checking.

4

Slide off the softened gel

Remove one wrap at a time. The gel should look cloudy, feel soft, and be visibly lifting at the edges. Using a cuticle pusher or orangewood stick, gently push from the cuticle toward the free edge — the softened gel should slide off with very little resistance.

Key rule If it's resisting, don't force it. Rewrap that finger and soak for another 5 minutes. Any gel that doesn't come off easily isn't ready — forcing it is how natural nail damage happens.
5

Smooth and finish

Once all gel is off, lightly buff the nail surface with a fine buffer to remove any remaining residue and smooth the nail plate. One or two passes is all you need — don't over-buff. Wash hands thoroughly to remove all acetone residue.

Finish with cuticle oil massaged generously into each nail and the surrounding skin. Acetone is drying — the oil replenishes moisture and keeps natural nails flexible and healthy for your next set.

Taking a break between sets? Keep applying cuticle oil daily. It's the single best thing you can do for natural nail health — it keeps the nail plate flexible and the surrounding skin conditioned. CND Solar Oil is our team's go-to.
